Building a post-capitalist global movement

Solón is a strong critic of capitalism, arguing that in order to stop climate change we need to change ourselves and shift from the capitalist paradigm of unlimited growth to one that pushes instead for the redistribution of wealth. “We need to recover our sense of community between us and with nature. We need to recover the control of the resources of the society that have been privatized to redistribute the benefits between all while preserving harmony with nature.” Solón is also critical of the notion of a “green economy,” saying it’s “about cheating nature while making a profit out of it.” He says that putting a price tag and commodifying the functions of nature does not recognize limits, but encourages and promotes “new speculative derivative markets on nature.”

Instead, Solón says the shift to a post-capitalist reality can be achieved by following the core principles of buen vivir, an idea of how to “live well” as opposed to “live better.” This idea emerged in South America in the late 20th century, but is rooted in the harmonious relationship that indigenous people of the Andean region had with nature. He says buen vivir is like the “dream of the rights of Mother Earth,” and that it can be a model of how to live communally with fewer demands on nature.

Hoy es todavía

La primera vez que leí esta frase me llamó la atención. Fue en un dibujo de la serie “El Quijote y los Perros” que mi padre expuso en 1974. Eran los tiempos de la dictadura militar. Mi hermano José Carlos había sido detenido, torturado y hecho desaparecer a principios de 1972. La oscuridad no tenía misericordia. Hoy la situación ha cambiado. Nuevos y mayores peligros acechan.

El sistema capitalista está produciendo un genocidio y un ecocidio sin precedentes. El desempleo, el despilfarro de los fondos públicos para salvar a los bancos, el alza del precio de los alimentos, el recorte de las conquistas sociales, la concentración de riqueza en el 1% de la población, el calentamiento global que superará los 4º C gracias a los resultados de Cancún y ahora Paris, la mercantilización de la naturaleza a través de la «economía verde», la xenofobia creciente y las intervenciones armadas están poniendo en riesgo la supervivencia de la vida como la conocemos.

Hoy no es suficiente echar a un dictador o a un gobierno. Hoy es necesario cambiar el sistema para salvar la vida. Hoy es vital articular y unificar  las acciones espontáneas que se producen a nivel mundial. Hoy debemos expandir el fantasma de la indignación para que como humanidad seamos capaces de cambiar el curso de la historia haciendo realidad los derechos humanos y los derechos de la Madre Tierra. ¡Hoy es Todavía!
